Who would love this:  Parents looking for a "sweet spot" in games - something simple but challenging enough for kids and adults

Our kids (6 and 9) are at that stage where we’re constantly searching for the sweet spot in games - challenging enough to keep them engaged and feeling in control, but simple enough that both can play without getting lost in rules overload. Splendor Kids from Asmodee Australia hits that balance perfectly.

Why I love ❤️ it? 

(1) Simple Rules & Fun For All

Simple rules – easy to learn, fun for all! Each player picks a colour and a meeple to represent them. The goal? Travel through the kingdom, passing towns and villages by paying resources to move up the board and reach the castle. On your turn, you do one of two things: Take resources (three different, two of the same, or one gold coin as a wild card), or pay resources to move. As players move, they land on villages or cities. Villages let you take an extra turn (great for grabbing more resources), while cities award city tokens - permanent resources that stay with you all game. Once used, they flip face-down until you reach another city, where they’re refreshed and ready to use again.

(2) Strategy & Decision-Making

While it looks straightforward, the resources are finite, forces players to watch what others are doing and adjust their plans. There’s far more strategy here than you’d expect from a kids’ game - which resources to collect, which path to choose, village or city? Plenty of thinking for little gamers!

(3) Smart Central Boards Design - Double-Sided & Removable Section

The central boards are double-sided, and you can even shorten the game by removing a section entirely - perfect for first-time players or quicker sessions. There’s also an advanced mode that introduces additional village tokens, like Treasure (a wild card), Drought (forces players to discard down to five resources), and the Kind-Hearted Thief, who makes the active player give a resource to another player. More choices, more interaction, more fun!

(4) Excellent Components Quality

The component quality is excellent! I love that the stickers on the tray act as a quick visual guide for kids, quickly showing how many resources to use per player count. The box insert and the treasure chest–shaped storage are genuinely delightful! The four meeples with are full of personality, each with unique shapes, colours, and looks!

Who would love this:  Anyone who loves abstract games with a hint of "scary" elements 

Ever played a scary game where you shuffle colourful skulls around and chomp on your enemies’ eyeballs? Nope? Neither had I – until Cannibal Eyes from Recent Toys rolled onto my table. The rule is simple: the more eyes you collect, the more powerful you become. It’s a brilliantly bonkers name wrapped in a slightly goofy “scary” theme that’s absolutely perfect for Halloween. Thank you Divisible by Zero for providing a copy. 

Why I love ❤️ it: 

(1) Abstract Game - Move A Skull, Devour An Eye

An abstract game - the aim is simple: manoeuvre your skulls so their mouths line up next to your opponents’ eyes… and devour them. First player to digest four eyes wins. Setup follows the player count (2 players = 4 skulls each; 3 players = 3 skulls each, etc.). On your turn, you must perform 2 actions involving 2 different skulls. You can: Move a skull two spaces horizontally or vertically (no moving backwards – which makes fleeing deliciously tricky)/ Rotate a skull around its chin into a free adjacent space / “Eat” an eye if your mouth is next to it (free action) / “Digest” an eye by moving it from your skull’s mouth to your eye-rack on the board edge (this costs one action). Tactical twist: if you eat the last eye of an opponent’s skull while it still has one sitting in its mouth, you claim both – and the one in the mouth is instantly digested! Skulls that lose all their eyes are eliminated, so positioning is everything.

(2) Attack, Escape, Or Secure Your Snack! 

This game is strategic but not brain-melting – Kids can grasp the rules quickly, but there’s plenty of delicious tension. With only two actions per turn – and each involving different skulls – you’re constantly torn between attacking, escaping, or securing your snack by digesting it. Every move telegraphs intent, giving opponents the chance to sabotage your feast.

(3) Halloween, Goofy Vibes

Love the scary Halloween vibes – Goofy, slightly gross, and hilariously theatrical. There’s even an optional rule: after seizing an eye, you may make the most revolting swallowing noise you can manage. Family game night has never sounded so disturbing.

(4) Colourful Components

Components – Big, bold, colourful skulls that demand attention on the table. It’s not an everyday filler, but it’s definitely a standout seasonal gem.

 “Sushi Go! Spin Some For Dim Sum by Gamewright - no sushi but all dim sum. As an Asian who grew up with regular dim sum meals, this game immediately captured my heart! Thank you Let's Play Games for providing a copy for review. 

Why I love ❤️ it: 

(1) Take The Dim Sum Or Spin The Turntable

The game comes with a turntable placed in the middle of the table, holding six piles of cards. Each pile represents a different dish, and every card scores points in its own way - as shown on your menu. Each player places their plate in front of one pile and starts with 4 chopstick tokens. On your turn, you take the top card from the pile next to you. Don’t like it? Spend a chopstick (or more), rotate the turntable, until you find a card you want. Play continues until everyone has 12 cards - highest score wins.

(2) Packed With Fun Decisions - Choose The Best Combo For Best Scores!

The game plays over 12 rounds with 12 different card types. It’s simpler than the original Sushi Go!, but still packed with fun decisions. You’ll chase sets (2, 3, or 4 of a kind), but each dish scores differently. For example - Turnip Cake gives 2 points each—but only if you have an odd number. Shumai (my personal favourite, in-game and in real life) scores a big 12 points when you collected 4 of them! Sesame Balls are a simple, tasty 2 points each; Special Plates offer 5 points if you collect all 4 required dishes. Chopsticks add a clever resource layer. Spend them to rotate the table - but spend too many early, and you may regret it later.

(3) Extremely CUTE Squishy Steamed Bun

The Steamed Bun adds a delightful twist. Collecting one lets you claim the squishy bun token - yes, an actual soft toy! You can “return” the bun to the turntable in exchange for rotating the table for free to any stack (pretty powerful!). Player with the most Steamed Bun cards get 3 points, and player with the least get -3 points. My only “complaint”? The bun is too cute - my kids just can’t stop “stealing” it. 

(4) Amazing Tabletop Appearance With Clever Spinning Tray

This game looks amazing on the table. The spinning tray with steamer baskets perfectly recreates the dim sum experience - dishes circling, players reaching, and that constant desire of grabbing that dish too far from you. Smiling sesame balls, cheerful dumplings, and adorable turnip cakes make every card a joy to collect.

It’s quick to learn, wildly addictive, and packed with playful feline energy that pulls everyone in from the very first round.

Why I love ❤️ it: 

(1) Fast-Paced & Competitive - Spot The Cat!

Think Where’s Wally, but make it cats. A LOT of cats. Setup and learning take literally one minute. It’s fast-paced, competitive, and instantly addictive. You’re given 3 crowd cards and a cat card - your mission? Spot that exact cat hidden among the chaos as fast as possible. Simple? Yes. Easy? Absolutely not 😼 The game is built around 4 sets of crowd cards (A–D), each with 3 cards, and over 100 hand-drawn cats. Even though the cats look similar, the one you’re searching for appears on only ONE of the three cards—so trust your eyes, your memory, and your reflexes!

(2) Over 100 Cats - Each With Name & Personality

Cats are EVERYTHING. Over 100 illustrated cats, each with its own name and personality - and none are repeated. Black-and-white cards are a genius choice: classy, clean, and sneakily challenging. We’ve got Shank (band-aid on head), Donut (yes, wearing a donut float), Meep Meep (fish in mouth), cats with bows, recovery cones, and even one with a noodle bowl toppled on its head. Some are based on real cats, and somehow they all blend in while still being totally distinct. Every cat matters. Every cat distracts you. I love it.

(3) Great Replay-ability 

This game is a replay-ability galore! With 4 crowd sets, 3 cards each that can be arranged in different layouts and sequence, and 100+ cats, no two games feel the same. Every round feels fresh, frantic, and hilarious.

Prime Climb from Math for Love - when your kid asks to play a maths game again and actually loves every up and down! Thank you Divisible by Zero for providing a copy. 

Why I love ❤️ it: 

(1) Guides 2 Pawns Along Colourful Number Spiral

Prime Climb feels a bit like Snakes & Ladders… but smarter, sharper, and far more exciting. Each player guides two pawns along a colourful number spiral, aiming to land exactly on 101. On each turn, you roll two special dice and use them one at a time - choosing to add, subtract, multiply, or divide based on your pawn’s position. For example: I roll a 4 and a 5. One pawn moves from 0 to 4. My other pawn is on 20 - multiply by 5 and suddenly I’m at 100. So near, yet still not there. And that’s the tension: every turn can flip your fortunes. You might sit stuck on 100 unless you cleverly subtract or divide your way forward! Land on a prime number (those red circles), and you earn a bonus card. Land on another player? You bump them straight back to the start.

(2) Prime Cards Earned When Land On Red Circles

Landing on red circles earns Prime Cards. Some help immediately, some you save, and some create total chaos. You might roll again, send another pawn back to the start, reverse your number (73 → 37), or even steal a card from someone else. These twists keep every game unpredictable and highly entertaining.

(3) Maths + Strategy + Merciless Fun!

This game can be merciless - and that’s part of the fun. Getting bumped back to the start stings, but recovery is quick if you play smart (multiplication is your best friend early on!). There’s constant decision-making: Can you go for the biggest move without overshooting 101? Do you play aggressively and bump others, or push toward the finish? Also - once you’re past 50, multiplication won’t help you move forward -  so subtraction and division suddenly become key. And rolling doubles? That gives you four moves instead of two — incredibly powerful if used well.

(4) Smart Game Board Design

The board design is genius. Each prime number under 10 has its own colour: 2 (orange), 3 (green), 5 (blue), 7 (purple). Composite numbers blend colours based on their factors — for example, 35 (5×7) is half blue, half purple. It’s not just pretty - it helps players instantly recognise factors, making multiplication and division more intuitive.

I love dexterity games. I’m also pretty proud of my dexterity skills… until I met Hot Cocot by Bioviva. Confession time 🙈: I still haven’t mastered the art of handling these tricky oval-shaped eggs, but somehow my kids are absolutely crushing it. Humbling, honestly. If you’re up for a challenge, keep reading 👀 Thank you Divisible by Zero for providing a copy! 

Why I love ❤️ it? 

(1) Super Challenging Dexterity Game ... with Chopsticks!

A dexterity game… with chopsticks. How hard could it be, right? I’ve been using chopsticks since the 80s! WRONG. Super hard. What’s included: eggs, egg cups, and chopsticks. To play - each player grabs two chopsticks and tries to place an egg into an egg cup before the others. A few rules - Only chopsticks allowed (no fingers!): The egg must be placed right side up (wide part down); Don’t touch the egg cups with your hands. Once all cups are filled, the round ends. The player who didn’t manage to place an egg (or placed the least) loses. Simple. Brutal. Hilarious.

(2) Solo Or Competitive Mode - Includes 6 Eggs, 5 Cups, 6 Pairs of Chopsticks

This game can be played with solo mode, or competitively. In the box you will find 6 eggs, 5 egg cups, and 6 pairs of short chopsticks for a total of up to 6-player game! Want chaos? Add sabotaging rules? Players who fail to place their egg can interfere by pushing empty egg cups with their chopsticks (without knocking them over or off the table). Nasty… but fun. Or play elimination rounds: one player out each round until the ultimate face-off between two finalists. I love there are so many ways to play! 

(3) Wooden & Well-Designed Chopsticks

The components are awesome! All wooden, short and well-designed chopsticks with slightly flattened tips; Perfectly egg-shaped wooden eggs — oval, wider at the bottom, pointy at the top, natural wood colour eggs that look almost real; and bright red wooden egg cups! 

(4) Eco-Friendly & Made Using Sustainably Sourced Materials

Everything fits neatly into a cube box - small, tidy, not taking-up too much space!And if you haven’t heard of Bioviva - it’s a French creator of eco-friendly, educational games - using sustainably sourced materials (FSC-certified paper and wood), vegetable-based inks, zero plastic packaging, and local manufacturing in France to reduce carbon emissions.

Turing Machine (from Scorpion Masque ) is a perfect game for mathematicians or anyone who enjoys numbers and logical deduction. The playtime is brief, the setup is easy, and the experience is incredibly satisfying. Thank you Let's Play Games for providing a copy. 

Why I love ❤️ it? 

(1) "Guess" 3 Numbers Using Criteria Cards + Verifiers

I’ve never seen anything quite like this before. For each chosen puzzle, the required criteria cards are placed in a wheel-like formation around a central “machine tile,” followed by their matching verification cards. To play, each player simultaneously creates a proposal: a sequence of 3 numbers (1–5) in three 3 colours -blue, yellow, and purple - using overlapping punch cards. Once everyone has made a proposal, players can question up to three verifiers. By placing the punch cards over a verifier, either a ✔️ checkmark or ❌ appears, revealing whether the proposal meets the criteria. Each player also has a notes sheet to track deductions. you create new proposals based on what you’ve learned, testing again until the answer is deduced. The first player to correctly “guess” the code wins. 

(2) Play Competitively Or Solo - A Quiet Thinking Game

You can play competitively or solo. It’s a gem for a clear mind - no chaos - Just quiet thinking and careful deduction. Perfect “me-time” gaming. The variety of criteria cards creates countless deduction challenges. Some tell you how many numbers are odd or even. Others reveal which colours contains the largest or smallest number. A card might say: “Blue is equal to / greater than / less than 3.” If you propose Blue = 2 and receive a ✔️, that means the number is indeed less than 3—but it doesn’t confirm it’s 2 (it could also be 1!) - a very common mistake that we kept making! 

(3) 20 Puzzles Included + More Available Online

The rulebook includes 20 puzzles, but the real magic is online at https://www.turingmachine.info. There you’ll find millions more. You can generate a random daily challenge (very much like a number version of Wordle). When you think you’ve solved it, you can enter your code online to check your answer.

(4) Build-Your-Own Card Holder + Cool Components

I love the cool partially cut-out game cover. The cards look fantastic, The build-your-own card holder is sturdy and satisfies my inner organizational obsession.

We are BIG fans of Zombie Kidz Evolution - so imagine our excitement when we received the brand new Zombie Teenz Evolution - Scorpion Masque ! This time, a new group of brave Teenz must defend their town against invading zombies - It’s chaotic. It’s cooperative. It’s ridiculously fun! Thank you Let's Play Games for providing a copy. 

Why I love ❤️ it: 

(1) Collect 4 Crates + Battle Zombie Hordes To Win

Instead of locking gates like in Zombie Kidz Evolution, players now travel around the town square collecting supply crates from surrounding buildings and returning them to the central base - all while battling zombie hordes. Collect 4 crates before the town is completely overrun and you win! Each turn, you roll the dice to see where zombies appear. A zombie pops up in the sewer or shamble forward toward the nearest building. If they enter a building, it becomes “overrun.” Place an overrun tile on it, and that horde leapfrogs clockwise to the next building, continuing until it finds an empty one. If the white die shows a ?, you draw an event card - and most of them are bad (all zombies advance… more zombies emerge… chaos everywhere!). Players get two actions per turn: move, attack, or transfer a crate. But here’s my favourite twist - moving crates requires teamwork - You must hand a crate to another player or receive one from them. 

(2) Brain Stickers To Track Progress + Secret Envelopes

Every game (win or lose) earns you a brain sticker in the rulebook to progress toward opening secret envelopes. Achievements unlock trophies, badges, and comic panels that expand the story. Who doesn’t love stickers?! 

(3) Legacy Style Game - New Powers/ Characters/ Rules/ Plot Twists

As a legacy-style game, certain milestones let you open numbered envelopes revealing new powers, characters, rules, and plot twists (some helpful… some not!). Without spoiling too much — there’s even a dog that can move independently and attack zombies. Opening envelopes becomes almost more exciting than the game itself!

(4) Fantastic Components - Foldable Board + Amazing Artwork

The components are fantastic. The foldable board is sturdy, the artwork is bright and bold, and the standees are full of personality. I love the diverse heroes - including a Teenz in a wheelchair - all equipped with awesome zombie-fighting gear. It’s got classic zombie-movie vibes, but in a kid-friendly, giggle-worthy way.

Any Lilo & Stitch fans around? Then you need to check out “The Fix for 626” from Z-Man Games - a competitive card game of deduction, risk, and chaos! Big thanks to Asmodee Australia for the copy!

Why I love ❤️ it: 

(1) Stitch Plush Bag + Cards & Chaos

Everything comes packed inside a Stitch plush bag: 17 character cards, a Stitch token (Good Stitch on one side, Experiment 626 on the other), 13 victory tokens, 5 reference cards, and the rulebook. To set up, set aside the top character card, then deal each player one card. One player starts with the Stitch token (Good-side up), and the player to their left begins by drawing a card and choosing one to play. Effects trigger immediately, and the chaos begins! When the deck runs out - or only one player survives - the player with the highest card value wins the round and earns a victory token. Good Stitch grants +2 and wins ties; Experiment 626 gives –2 and loses ties.

(2) Decision, Decision, Decision

The BEST part? Picking the right card and praying your hunch is correct. There are just enough effects to make every choice feel juicy. Want to pass Stitch to the left? That’s Gantu (0). Flip Stitch to the other side? Jumba (4). Boot someone holding Experiment 626 from the round? Leroy (5). Lilo rocks the highest value (8), and Nani follows with 7. Our table’s favourite chaos agent is the Grand Councilwoman (1) - guess someone’s card, and if you’re right - they’re out!

(3) Sharp Eyes + Good Deduction To Win

Light strategy, kid-friendly fun. The player aid lists exactly how many of each card exist, and played cards stay visible - so it’s not just luck! You’ll need sharp eyes and good deduction. For example, you can guess whether someone’s holding Lilo or Nani if enough cards are already out (watch out for Cobra Bubbles (2) who knocks either of them out!).

(4) Great Collection For Disney Fans!

Perfect for Disney lovers. The theme shines, the Stitch/626 token adds delicious tension, and everything fits into the fluffy Stitch plush bag - complete with rope handle for gaming on the go.

Why I love ❤️ it: 

(1) Classic "Guess Who?" Game With Bluey Twist

Same classic rules, but now with Bluey magic! This set comes with 24×2 Bluey-themed character cards and two flippable-door boards. Pop the face cards out, slide them in (the satisfying click is chef’s kiss), flip all the doors open, and pick your mystery character. Ask clever questions, flip down the mismatches, and make your guess when you’re feeling brave. First to five wins is the champion - cue victory dances worthy of Bandit.

(2) Ask Questions Like A True Bluey Fans!

Sounds like Nana! “Is your character blue?” - that’s probably Bluey, Bingo, Dad, Uncle Stripe, or Nana! Kids adore it, but adults get surprisingly competitive too—I definitely do when playing with my two little Bluey experts.

The boards are lightweight, sturdy, and make a delightful thud when doors flip down. Turn the board upside down and—voilà!—all doors pop open again. Each board even has a built-in 5-point score tracker so you can crown the true Heeler household champ. Love the satisfying components!

Mooki Island by Scorpion Masque - I just love stumbling across a game made for kids that ends up being just as fun (if not more!) for adults. Quick to play, a little strategic, and super satisfying. Big thanks to Let's Play Games for sending this copy our way!

Why I love ❤️ it:

Mooki Island is a fast 2-player game that’s easy to learn yet packed with sneaky choices. On your turn, you draw a card, peek at both sides, and decide which Mookie to add to your collection. Each Mookie belongs to a family, and you’re battling for those family trophies - but watch out for Spiders, because your opponent can send them crawling into your pile. And if you end up with the most Spiders, you’ll have to give up one of your hard-earned trophies. Simple rules, but loads to think about!

(2) Kid-Friendly - Make Clever Choices About Risk & Reward

The strategy is sneaky but super kid-friendly. You’re always watching what your opponent is collecting and deciding whether to battle it out for a big trophy, switch gears to grab smaller ones, or quietly scoop up an easy win. Legendary Mookies give you a double boost, while Spiders let you sabotage your rival - so even young players get to make clever choices about risk and reward. I especially love how it doubles as a memory game: kids start picking up on what their opponent has collected and learn to make smarter, faster decisions. It’s a brilliant way to build strategy skills without ever feeling heavy.

(3) Adorable Mookie Universe With Cute Creatures

The Mookies feel straight out of a Pokémon-style world - from the purplish moon dragon to the kite-like butterfly and the cheeky red-capped mushroom Mooki. Even the spiders are round, puffy, and cute! Each family has its own Legendary Mookie - with shiny, enchanting, holographic-style cards to make them feel extra special. It’s a colourful, charming little universe you can’t help but fall for.

We adored Monkey Palace, Asmodee Australia - first Lego game, so when a LEGO party game came along, we jumped right in. Brick Like This! packs all the joy of building bricks into a quick-burst of creativity and chaos! 

Why I love ❤️ this: 

(1) LEGO Game That Tests Your Communication Skills

Finally - a LEGO game that tests your communication skills! Each round, one player becomes the Instructor, drawing a shape card and describing how to build it using only words (no pointing, no touching!). Their teammate, the Builder, listens and gets to work. Each shape scores 5–8 points and uses that many bricks — the trickier the build, the bigger the reward. As soon as a Builder finishes, they shout ‘Done!’ and flip the timer, giving everyone else just 30 seconds to wrap up. Then comes the big reveal: place your creation on the 1:1 scale build card to see if you nailed it!

(2) Scales Well For Different Ages & Skill Levels

I love that this game scales so well for different ages and skill levels. The easiest cards break the shapes into clear brick outlines, while the tougher ones show just a silhouette - perfect for players who like a challenge. The trickier builds definitely call for imagination and sharp instructions, especially when choosing and positioning the right bricks. There are only eight shapes to master, and LEGO lovers will recognize the brick names right away - but even if you don’t, that’s fine too! Making up your own names is half the fun - whether it’s the ‘circle-hole brick,’ the ‘upside-down triangle,’ or the ‘sloping hill,’ everyone gets the idea. 

(3) Challenge Cards With Extra Rules!

The game also comes with a deck of challenge cards that crank up the chaos. These add extra rules like ‘no saying colours,’ ‘build with eyes closed,’ or our kids’ favourite - ‘no thumbs allowed!’ With 92 build cards and 20 challenge cards, there’s loads of replayability and plenty of ways to mix up the difficulty. We loved racing to finish first for those cheeky bonus points - every round turns into a fresh, hilarious surprise.

(4) Packed In Box For Game Night

This game comes neatly packed in a box that’s perfect to pull out on game night. Within minutes, you’ll have teammates shouting wild instructions while Builders scramble to make sense of the madness!

Why I love ❤️ it: 

(1) Soothing Cooperative Tile-Laying Game - Sail Your Ship Token!

This is perhaps the most soothing cooperative tile-laying game I’ve ever played. You begin by placing your HQ tile at the centre, then set sail with your ship token and a hand of movement tiles. On your turn, you’ll navigate the ocean, placing up to 3 tiles adjacent to your ship’s position. Each tile must line up correctly with neighbouring edges - coastlines with coasts, water with water. Your ship sails onto each tile you place, expanding your patrol area. Movement tokens let you travel further, and clever teamwork lets you swap tiles with teammates to keep the sea open and connected. The game ends once all tiles are placed or discarded, and points are scored for fully explored tiles completely surrounded on all four sides. 

(2) Gentle Balance Between Planning & Cooperation

What makes Beacon Patrol shine is its gentle balance between planning and cooperation. You’ll need to think ahead - avoid getting your ship trapped behind land tiles, use open oceans to stay mobile, and coordinate with others to make the most of every move. The movement tokens add a subtle layer of strategy that feels satisfying without being stressful.

(3) Two Mini-Expansions Included

For added depth, the two mini-expansions - Windmills and Piers - add clever scoring twists that reward thoughtful placement. Windmills earn extra points for nearby open seas, while Piers benefit from its connected land tiles, making each map feel even more alive.
