Draftosaurus, By Ankama - REVIEW

Nature / Type:             Board game

Recommended age:    8 year-old ++

Who would love this: Kids that love strategy games + dinosaurs

In Draftosaurus by Ankama, you’ll create a charming Jurassic Park that’s more about cuteness than chaos. Thank you Let's Play Games for providing another enticing game!

Why I love ❤️ this game:

(1) Place 12 Dinosaurs Strategically To Maximise Score

In Draftosaurus, each player starts with a board and draws 6 hidden dinosaurs from a bag. On their turn, they roll a placement die that dictates conditions for the other players’ placements. Players then select one dinosaur from their hand to place in the zoo according to the die’s conditions (e.g., must be placed in an empty pen or in a pen without a T-Rex). Each pen has specific restrictions, like only allowing the same type of dinosaurs or requiring alternating types, and players score points based on how strategic the placement is. If a player can’t or doesn’t want to place a dinosaur, they can set it in the River, scoring one point for each. After placing, players pass their remaining dinosaurs to the left, and the placement die moves to the next player. The game lasts for six turns and two rounds, allowing each player to place a total of twelve dinosaurs on board. The player with the highest score at the end wins!

(2) Double-Sided Board - Adding Variety To Gameplay

I love the double-sided board with summer and winter versions that add variety to the gameplay, along with the clear icons for each pen. Draftosaurus strikes a perfect balance with its drafting decisions, offering a fun puzzle without being overly frustrating. For instance, the die presents six placement conditions—“tree” for the 3 woodland areas, “rock” for 3 pens at the grasslands, “toilet” for right-side pens, and “food court” for left-side pens. Scoring is driven by the specific rules of each pen; for example, one pen awards 7 points for placing 3 dinosaurs, while another gives 5 points for each pair of identical dinosaurs. An extra point is awarded for each enclosure that includes at least one T-Rex.

(3) Super Cute Dinosaur Meeples

The 6 species of wooden dinosaur meeples are incredibly cute, featuring bold colors that truly make them stars of the game. Their fun curves and vibrant personalities add to the overall aesthetics. The boards are thick and durable, designed to withstand repeated plays.
